My two month mark passed, Ive been trying to get my head round the ES7000 System Concepts and Architecture training course, It's quite interesting, but the CBT's (computer based traning) are a hard slog, it takes over an hour just to go through one. By the time I've finished my eyes will be square!! I am trying to get a proper website together at the moment, and when that happens this Placement logbook will be published there.... I am putting all the pages together in the evenings and when I have them ready I'll find a host.....a cheap one......and set this blog up as a section. I'm trying to get all the MSDN cd's filed at the moment, and a massive box of software (all Clearpath 8.1) arrived which will also need sorting and putting away. I dug out the Windows 2000 Proffesional Training manual aswell recently, thats next on my list after the ES7000 training is finished, I hope to complete my MCE firly early and then maybe give myself more of a chance to get the other exams out of the way....

Mondays always seem to be a quiet day, although it did give me a chance to finally sort my pay out, I was on the wrong tax code and was only getting half of my salary every month, so I had to call the tax office and sign some forms, now hopefully everything will be sorted and I wont have to worry when next months slip comes.

Arrived at work to find that my computer had got another virus, this time it was the welchia worm (the so called "forced patch" for Blaster)
So that meant I had to spend the whole morning cleaning it up! (It wouldn't have taken so long but I needed to install all the win2K services packs first)

It will mbe busy today, so I'll try and update early in case I have no time later. I will be working in the UTC lab today on one of the big mainframes, just routine maintenance, mainly swapping tapes for the rollback (this work was requested by someone off site, named Adrienne Harrow)

Training again today, one of the goals I set with Peter Hill (manager of TCS, and my Boss) was completeing all 4 of the basic training CBT (Computer Based Training) courses, they are supposed to last about an hour each, so I will reluctantly limit myself to one a day!? Todays module was on workstation safety, It did indeed take about an hour.

This was my first day working here alone, Irfan was off today so it was left to me. I think I coped pretty well (If I do say so myself). I started my company training as well today , it was only basic Health and safety, but it was quite amusing. I will do some more tomorrow, I need to complete all Health and safety trainingg in my first couple of weeks.

Friday of my first week, I finished the first of the projects today, as the it will be in use from monday. I set up a small private network comprising six PC's linked to a 10mbps hub, with two KVM switches each controlling three PC's. Each PC was installed with a clean installation of Windows 2000 server updated to service pack 3 and the latest version of Norton Anti-Virus. The machines are required for a recovery runthrough demonstration, set-up to be viewed by NCSL, a client of Unisys.

I am assigned my first project by Peter, setting up a Windows 2000 recovery test bed for a demonstration that our department will be giving to one of Unisys' clients.

Well, this is my first entry into my Blogger account, and the first time I have actually used the system. I will be creating a log of my Industrial placement as part of my University Course. I am currently studying a course entitled Multimedia Technology and Design at Brunell University and so far I have been enjoying it thoroughly. Today I met all the other students working here on placement, theres a group nof about 8 still working here from last year, (I am the first student to start from the new group) they are all very friendly and only have good things to say about the company. It was difinatly my first choice when it cam to possible placements and I have not been dissapointed so far.

I started here at Unisys on the 1st of July so I will give a quick account of what happened during those first two days.

My second day at Unisys. I am shadowing the former placement student, Irfan Munshi untill he leaves on the 10th of July, learning what is expected of me and meeting those I will be working with. Early on we take care of the small admin Items still outstanding, I am set up on the company phone network, given a phone number and voicemail and a login for WEBTREX, the companies on line expense tracking system. Part of my job will be to look after the MSDN (that's Microsoft Developers) Library, and Unisys' own data and software library. Basically there is a searchable database storing the location of each item of software, if people need the software then they call me and I find it and send it out to them. When any new software arrives from Microsoft or Unisys I book it onto the system then store it in the library ready for someone who needs it. A package arrived from Microsoft today so I spent some time learning how to book it onto the system then label and store it, it's all very simple and won't take up much of my time, which is good because I've a feeling that I will be pretty busy otherwise.

00:24 - I arrived at what will be my home for the next 3 months, as much as the thought of living in university halls repelled me, I went in and fell asleep.

08:00 - Next thing I know, my alarm has exploded into life and it's the morning of the first day of my Industrial Placement with Unisys.

09:05 - After a rush to get changed and eat I am ready to leave, I will be walking today as my car has yet to pass it's MOT.

09:29 - I arrive just in time, my first day starts at 9:30 on the dot, a message is sent for someone to come and meet me.

09:35 - I am met by Peter Hill, the manager of the department I will be working in. Very friendly he shows me around introducing me to all the people I will be working with and where I will be working.

11:05 - We run through the outline of the various divisions within Unisys, trying, I think to help me gain a feeling for how the organization works. So objectives are discussed and some items of administration are marked for attention.

13:20 - I start registering myself on the network, allocating sign-ins on all the various machines, and all of the corporate standard Intranet sites.

17.15 - My first day ends.
